In Hoc Anno Domini

Fauci’s War on Science: The right way to deal with this pandemic, it said, was to focus on those who could face severe outcomes from disease – a very plain point and nothing new. There was nothing to be gained by locking down the whole of society because of a pathogen with such a huge differential in its demographic impact. An interesting debate between two scholars on either side. And now, even the Wall St. Journal is joining the discussion.

In Hoc Anno Domini. This editorial was written in 1949 by the late Vermont Royster and has been published annually in the Wall Street Journal since.

Systemic Bias Against Asians. To the San Francisco school board, some minorities are more equal than others. Funny, but that sounds an awful lot like what Asian-Americans are experiencing these days, especially in education. They work hard to get into good schools—only to run up against an increasingly systemic orthodoxy on equity, which holds that Asian-Americans are taking more than their fair share. It helps explain why at Harvard Asian-Americans have both the highest average SAT scores and the lowest admissions rate of any racial group.

Our military’s civilian leadership is corrupt and incompetent. The brass commands respect neither among the citizenry nor the forces it commands. Mid-level officers are in a rage — a dangerous phenomenon that in many other nations triggers insurrections and coups.

Today, as our country experiences the disintegration of one emergency into a full-fledged crisis of epic proportions, the Democrats, as partners in running the government, have no policy ideas to contribute or sense of doing what is right for the country. The Dems have abandoned America in favor of an illusory doomed fantasy of a socialist/communist world with no understanding of its true future implications of less freedom, less happiness, more censorship, increased inflation with a lower standard of living, and more State control with a "free" economy where nothing is "free."

Evicting Donald Trump was clearly a catastrophe

If the federal government can’t win a war, can’t preserve law and order, can’t secure its own seat of governance, can’t control the border, and can’t defend the idea of America, then what can it do? Well, it can collect taxes. It can also guarantee lucrative employment for a class of elite mediocrities who will never endure consequences for their growing list of failures.

Evicting Donald Trump was clearly a catastrophe. Despite the frenzied, wall-to-wall, linked-armed international effort to present Trump as a brutal, crooked, moron, he almost eliminated unemployment and illegal immigration, did eliminate energy imports, and by identifying and incentivizing “enterprise zones,” he created conditions in which the lowest 20 per cent of American income earners were gaining income in percentage terms compared to the top 10 per cent on the income scale. Read the whole thing.

The general officer U.S. military ranks have a big problem: The field grade officer and noncommissioned officer ranks have had enough of the double standards applied to leadership. Whereas those out in the field are held strictly accountable for any failure, real or imagined, general officer ranks are rarely held accountable for far worse leadership failures that have a far greater impact.

The Taliban executed an Afghan folk singer; "music is forbidden in Islam." The militant group killed Fawad Andarabi on Friday at his family's farm about 60 miles north of Kabul. Andarabi's son said his father played a bowed lute called a ghaychak and sang traditional songs about Afghanistan.

President Joe Biden waived a mandate in June that would have forced the Pentagon to provide a detailed report to Congress about the risks of leaving Afghanistan. Under the federal statute, the administration was barred from reducing troops in Afghanistan below 2,000 without first briefing Congress about the expected impact on U.S. counterterrorism operations and the risk to American personnel.

Pentagon strategy chief Colin Kahl is in the hot seat over his role in the Biden administration's bungled Afghanistan withdrawal, four months after Senate Republicans unanimously opposed his nomination and warned that his appointment would be disastrous for national defense policy. Kahl, the civilian head of policy planning at the Department of Defense and third highest ranking department official, has been a key player in planning for the Afghanistan withdrawal and the day-to-day policy decisions on the ground.

Last week, Fox News Host Rachel Campos-Duffy had the gumption to say out loud that Emperor Joe was wearing no metaphorical clothes. In addressing the collapse of leadership in Washington, Campos-Duffy asked, “Who are the people responsible for putting someone this incompetent and frankly this, you know, mentally frail in this position?” Having dared to ask the obvious question, Campos-Duffy gave the obvious answer. “No one knew better his state of mind than Dr. Jill Biden,”

According to an admission obtained from the State Department, Biden officials recently directed federal agencies to scrub their websites of official reports detailing the $82.9 billion in military equipment and training provided to the Afghan security forces since 2001. There are an estimated 10,000–15,000 Americans in Afghanistan now who need to be evacuated as the Taliban seize control of the country. Anyone left behind could find themselves reliving the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis or the hostage crisis in Lebanon shortly thereafter. The Taliban are undoubtedly well aware of the leverage they could obtain by holding Americans hostage. Evacuation is therefore not just a pressing humanitarian matter; it is essential to preventing a bunch of Stone Age barbarians from dictating terms to the United States of America.

The FBI has uncovered little evidence that the January 6 Capitol riot was organized beforehand, four current and former law-enforcement officials told Reuters on Friday.

The U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan on Saturday warned Americans looking to evacuate not to head to Kabul airport unless directed to do so, citing “potential security threats.” The alert came one day after President Biden claimed that the U.S. had not received reports of American citizens being unable to enter Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul.

The most common explanations for the botched the American scuttle from Afghanistan are (i) Joe Biden lacks the capacity to make competent decisions and (ii) Joe Biden stubbornly rammed through his decisions against the advice of our armed forces and intelligence agencies. Most commentators on the Right side of the blogosphere seem to believe both, reminding me of the left-wing denunciations of George W. Bush for being both too stupid to eat a pretzel safely and a war criminal mastermind.

Where are the fastest growing cities in the United States? None are in Arizona.

Now that we have moved, I am testing the limits of “cutting the cord”; eliminating expensive services thought essential to modern life.  It is working very well, though you do still have to have decent Internet service.

On your smart TV or device like ROKU or Amazon Fire, search for a streaming channel called “Locast”. You can try it for free. Locast will give you all the local TV stations plus about 35 more extra channels in real time including a TV guide. The extra channels will give you old programs with things like a teenage Clint Eastwood in Rawhide. Locast has annoying commercials, but you can eliminate them for $5/month. You will lose the DVR’s ability to save shows for later, but you can find your favorites on the Internet in a day or so.

For the telephone, we are using VOIP (voice over Internet protocol) which gives me all the services and more than I got from AT&T for $75/month. Your prices may vary, but I am paying ooma.com about $5/month. You can buy their widget from Best Buy, try it out, and return it if you don’t like it. My experience is that it works better than AT&T.

National Public Radio is liberal. This isn't a surprise.

NPR is liberal. I suspect they don't even know they are liberal. The thin veil over National Public Radio’s commitment to objective journalism has been lifted. NPR has announced a new ethics policy that allows its journalists to “participate in activities that advocate for ‘the freedom and dignity of human beings’ on both social media and in real life.”

Kamala has reached her level of incompetence

NPR's Brilliant Self-Own. National Public Radio complains about a media figure who tells people "what their opinions should be" and uses political "buzzwords"

There is a management theory called the "Peter Principle", which says that people are promoted until they reach a level beyond their level of competence, where they stop advancing.  This article says that Kamala Harris has reached that level and will not advance further.

The Search for the Elusive White Nationalists and Supremacists in the Church. The church, we’re being told, is being overrun with white, Christian nationalists and white supremacists! And, these nationalists and supremacists are demanding fealty to – you knew it was coming – Donald J. Trump! Some claim that “It’s a “war” for the faith, tearing the universal church apart!”

Energy company seeking $15 billion in damages over President Joe Biden’s canceling the Keystone XL pipeline project.

Seems right. Energy company TC Energy has said it’s seeking $15 billion in damages from the United States government over President Joe Biden’s decision to cancel the Keystone XL pipeline project. In a statement on July 2, the Canada-based company said it had filed a notice of intent with the State Department to begin a legacy North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) claim under the U.S.–Mexico–Canada Agreement.

Indian Point Energy Center was a three-unit nuclear power plant station located in Buchanan, New York, just south of Peekskill. The facility has permanently ceased power operations as of April 30, 2021. Before its closure, the station's two operating reactors generated about 2,000 megawatts (MWe) of electrical power. As a result of the shutdown and closure of the plant, the carbon-free power generated by the plant was replaced by power generated by carbon-producing fossil fuels.

The infrastructure bill is putting money in the wrong places

The infrastructure bill is putting money in the wrong places. Biden has proposed a policy that, by some estimates, would allocate $165 billion for public transit (including urban rail — subways, light rail, and commuter rail) against only $115 billion to fix and modernize roads and bridges. Transit, which accounts for about 1 percent of overall urban and rural ground transportation, would receive nearly 60 percent of the money.

One of the most elementary lessons of economics is that incentives matter. And yet he kept going, overcoming every obstacle and being the main missionary catalyst of a spiritual movement that literally changed the world. Would You Suffer Years of Extreme Pain, Hardship For A Lie?

Yet he also used a flat-out lie to justify his gun control agenda — a lie that led even The Washington Post to deliver Biden a scathing rebuke. The Washington Post‘s Glenn Kessler fact-checked this statement, giving Biden a whopping Four Pinocchios.
